The Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Number One Place.

Initially, this album may look more like an arduous academic quiz rather than a new popular music album by an artist whose last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Divided across 4 separate movements and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a head-spinning symphonic work exploring female mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, frequently by way of the perspective of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself renders the work of other artists appear rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That this album manages to transcend overly academic posturing is almost miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to blend the past and modern styles, the stakes feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more dramatic. What truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit comes forth clearly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration before a comically exaggerated string surge crashes down like comedic impact. The track then shifts to the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never exactly understand—or even want to predict—what it will go to next."

Nearly each song ends in a totally different point than how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work starts out dark and sinister, with menacing beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is navigating the line between radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spins skyward. This trick is repeated on a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in excess. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires time to fully mine but never feels like hard work. Where other major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flit from discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
