Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
