Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
